Sacramento natives and longtime friends Matt Morrow and Chris Post took different career paths after high school. Matt pursued land surveying, while Chris built a career in commercial real estate and digital marketing.

Fast forward 25 years, and life brought them together again during the COVID quarantine. As they brainstormed how to merge their skills and passions, they saw an opportunity: combining Matt’s expertise in land surveying with Chris’s experience in technology and marketing to create something that made a real impact.

Matt had always been intrigued by the work utility locators and potholing companies did on his surveying projects. He saw firsthand how crucial it was for the design phase of construction, preventing damage and accidents by accurately identifying subsurface utilities. After diving deep into research, Matt proposed the idea of starting a subsurface utility engineering services company that would bring a one-stop shop for civil engineering and similar design phase companies for their subsurface utility investigations.

Chris immediately saw the potential! His research revealed that pretty much all utility locating companies were using outdated methods or overcharging for minimal work. Worst, they catered more to the basic contractor trying to avoid a strike while digging a trench, where as no one was offering a professional consultative approach that surveyors and engineers are actually looking for.

Together, they realized there was a segment of the market with a real need for more professionalized locating service offerings along with digital deliverables and customized workflows that design-phase companies rely on to work more efficiently and accurately.

That’s how 2M Locating was born. As we grew, adding potholing and other services, we rebranded to 2M General Engineering, keeping our focus on one thing: helping design-phase trades work safer and smarter by accurately locating, mapping, and documenting underground utilities.
